Windows 10 Migration Process
Posted by Patricia Goodman on 10 May 2018 12:22 PM

The process of migrating employee's virtual Windows 7 computers to Windows 10 will occur by department. That way your migration will occur at the same time as others who are in your department. We anticipate that each department's migration will take one full day to complete. During the migration process, you won't have access to your own virtual computer, but you will be able to connect to a non-persistent virtual computer so that you can continue working. The non-persistent computer will have all GC software installed, and you will have access to your regional networked printer/copier. The start date for this summer migration project is June 1st, and we fully anticipate that all employee Windows 7 virtual computers will be migrated before fall semester begins.

What you can expect on the day of your migration:

When we start your migration process, you will be logged off of your Windows 7 virtual computer. While we are performing your migration, you will be able to log onto a non-persistent virtual computer so that you can keep working. Note that specialized software that you would have installed yourself on your virtual computer will not be available on a non-persistent computer. You will need to re-add your printers so that you can print while using the non-persistent computer. And, your browser bookmarks will not be available (unless you're using Chrome Sync on the Google Chrome browser--see more information below).

After your migration is complete, ITS will notify you, and then you will be able to log onto your new Windows 10 virtual computer. Note that during the migration process and after your migration is complete, you will no longer have access to your old Windows 7 virtual computer.

Do you store content locally on your current Windows 7 virtual computer? eg. you've saved files to the desktop or have content in the Downloads folder that you wish to keep.
ITS will be migrating the following content from your Windows 7 virtual computer to your Windows 10 virtual computer:
- files that are saved on the Desktop
- files that are in the Downloads folder

We will attempt to migrate the following items, but cannot guarantee its success:
- special setup within applications, such as customization of the Ribbon in the Microsoft applications, or special shortcuts to save files directly to a specific location.

We will not migrate the following content:
- we will not migrate anything that is in the Pictures folder. Please copy any pictures you want to keep to Google Drive.
- we will not migrate anything that is in the Videos folder. Please copy any pictures you want to keep to Google Drive.
- we will not migrate anything that is in the Music folder (including the iTunes music library)
- we will not migrate Firefox or Internet Explorer bookmarks. If you use the Google Chrome browser, you can set up Chrome Sync to store browser bookmarks and browsing history to your Google account so that you can access it from any device when using the Chrome browser.  See below for instructions.

Google Chrome browser bookmarks:
- if you use Chrome Sync with the Google Chrome browser, all of your bookmarks, items in the browser toolbar, and browsing history will be saved in your Chrome Sync account and will be available in the Chrome browser on your new Windows 10 computer. If you are not currently using Chrome Sync, see the following instructional article for directions on how to enable Chrome Sync. You will need to do this prior to your scheduled migration date.  https://service.goshen.edu/support/index.php?/Knowledgebase/Article/View/1063/204/sign-in-and-out-of-chrome-sync
