Campus Windows 10 Migration

Campus Windows 10 Migration

This summer, ITS will begin migrating the operating system on employee virtual Windows computers to Windows 10. We will also be migrating all virtual Windows computers in computer labs, and instructor computers in classrooms to Windows 10. The reason for the migration is because the existing version that we are using (Windows 7) is seven years old, and Microsoft has ended mainstream development and support for Windows 7. The migration to Windows 10 will enable ITS to bring virtual Windows computers up to industry standard, and enable us to continue to use the management tools that we have invested in for the campus virtual environment.

When will the migration take place?

The migration to Windows 10 will be a phased approach, starting on June 1st. We will start with migrating the computer labs and classroom computers. Employee virtual Windows computers will follow, with migration happening one department at a time. Currently, a schedule for department migrations has not been determined. Look for communication from the ITS department in the future, with plenty of notice to departments for purposes of planning and preparing. Our goal will be to have all employee virtual Windows computers, lab virtual computers, and classroom instructor computers migrated to Windows 10 by the start of the 2018 fall semester.

Training and resources

We recognize that this new operating system will be a significant change for many of our users. ITS is committed to providing you with support and training resources throughout the transition, by way of a collection of short training videos, written instruction, hands-on workshops, and the opportunity to practice on a computer running Windows 10 prior to your migration.
Look for future communication from the ITS department regarding scheduling and training resources.
