Moodle: The Basics

  1. Find Your Course:

Easier navigation to active courses is being worked on by our IT department. In the meantime, access your courses using one of these options

a.  Option 1: Search for your course from the main screen:

b. Option 2: Browse for your course beneath the heading “My Courses.”

 

  1. Edit your course information:
    1. On the right hand side of the screen, turn editing on.
    2. Look for the tiny gear (editing) icon. Clicking this will allow you to change and add text.
    3. Examples of what you might want to change:

            i.  At the top of your courses, click the edit icon to add the name of your course, a description, and an image

           

            ii. Change the words “Topic 1” to actual topic names

  1. Add content to your course

a.  Click the “Add and Activity or Resource” button to upload files, assignments, links, and more. You can also drag and drop files from your computer right onto Moodle and they will automatically upload.

b.  To reorder information, click the plus sign icon next to the item you want to move, and then drag and drop to where you want it to go.

  1. Emailing your students

a.  To email your students, you need to add the QuickMail block. Scroll down to the bottom right of your screen.

b.  Look for the “Add a Block” header.

c.  From the add menu, select QuickMail.

 

  1. Other Moodle icons and what they do:

a.  Rename the displayed title of items using this icon

b.  The icon indents items. This can help with class organization.

c.  The duplicate icon:

d.  Delete:

e.  The eye icon allows you to hide particular items from students.   There is also an eye icon in the top right of every topic section. This lets you hide the entire topic from students. When it’s crossed out it looks like: Just click it to re-open and allow students access to hidden items.
