How to set up and register a device that needs a phone to be on the same Wi-Fi network [examples: Google Home, Amazon’s Echo and possibly Apple TV]

Connect both devices originally to the GC Legacy network for set up.

To connect your mobile device to the gc-legacy Wi-Fi network, you may have to change some of your Wi-Fi settings and you will need to register the devices in DNS.

  1. On your device, make sure you are not using a randomized MAC address. On both iOS and Android phones, you will have to go through your Wi-Fi settings to change this. Next to the Wi-Fi network, click the gear icon (Android) or the information icon (iOS).
    1. On Android, select “Privacy” and then select “Use device MAC.”
    2. On iOS, make sure “Use Private Address” is turned off.
  2. Next, register your device through DNS like you would any other device

Once the device is all set up and functioning I would recommend having the user change their phone back to using either the gc or eduroam network since those are both far more secure than gc-legacy.
